Guns Blazing
The world of entertainment is filled with guns. While in real life, guns can be cool; we have some that seem straight out of science fiction :
But by and large, guns are only really cool to enthusiasts who occasionally go to a range to kill all manner of paper creatures. In the not so real world though, there are more than any one person could imagine and they do things that we could only hope to accomplish in real life.
Some are just variations of regular guns, often in the hands of someone who turns them from merely cool guns into ass-kicking weapons of bloodshed and awesomeness, like John Preston from Equilibrium.
Some movies, and a lot of games take the time to dream up their own weapons of death and awesomeness, so here are a few notable examples:
Portal’s Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (Portal Gun)
Not your standard offensive device, but definitely one of the coolest guns ever, It allows you to create dimensional doors in walls floors and ceilings and move through them, drop objects through them… well that’s pretty much it, but you’d be amazed at how much freedom that lame description allows you. I recommend downloading Steam and getting the demo for Portal if you have never played it.
Half Life 2’s Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator (Gravity Gun)
The gravity gun in HL2 changed the way many of us saw gaming. After using it, i was no longer content to leave things lying around in the game world; I wanted to pick things up and kill things with them. Luckily, Valve software saw fit to make this a replacement of sorts for the crowbar used in the original game. This was a good choice. I still maintain there is nothing better in online gaming than killing someone with a toilet.
Aliens’ M-40 A 1
Jim Cameron set the bar for unique weapons in science fiction movies with Aliens. This is the coolest military weapon to date created for a movie, in my opinion. I carries 100 rounds of case-less ammunition (the kind Metal Storm uses, over a decade before Metal Storm existed), has a grenade launcher, and immediately makes anyone holding it look like a bad-ass. By the end of the movie, it turns whiny crybaby Hudson into a mad killing machine. As a movie gun, it has yet to see it’s equal.
These are just the tip of the iceberg. I will elaborate and post more, but for now, i need to keep my day job, so back to work.

Very interesting blog. The 30,000 rounds per minute sounded like a buzz saw. Immediately thought of Jesse Ventura’s character “Blain” in “Preditor”chopping half the jungle down with the GE M134 Minigun.
Thank you
I think I will carry on on this subject for a little while, I like the juxtaposition of real guns vs imaginary. The line is getting blurry these days.
